Mathematics

At Sacred Heart RC Primary School, we follow the progression of learning for individual strands of the 2014 National Curriculum for mathematics. In EYFS we have updated our mathematics curriculum and teaching to meet the requirements of the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage 2021, and the guidance within Development Matters in order to support the children’s preparation for the National Curriculum in Year 1.

At Sacred Heart RC Primary School, we teach a mastery approach to Mathematics through 'Red Rose Mastery', meaning that we provide our pupils with a range of opportunities to develop a deep and lasting understanding of mathematical procedures and concepts. Pupils are taught through whole-class interactive teaching, where the focus is on all pupils working together on the same lesson content at the same time, ensuring that all can master concepts before moving to the next part of the curriculum sequence. We use Lancashire KLIPs (Key Learning Indicators of Performance) to support our teaching of the National Curriculum so that any gaps in learning can be easily identified and addressed. Children will then be able to move on through the stages and naturally support their progression. We ensure that no pupil is left behind and all pupils develop a ‘can-do’ attitude and self-belief in their math’s capability.

The methods from the written calculation policies above have been placed into summary sheets, outlining the methods and progression of each calculation within each year group throughout school. These are a fantastic resource for parents/carers to support their child's learning in calculation at home.

Each year, a team of children from Year 5 and Year 6 represent school to compete against local schools at the annual  'Mad4Maths Quiz'. Last year, not only did our children compete well, they also won the competition!- Well done everyone.
